Bicycle in S8 and S11

Postby kosemuckel » Wed 19 September 2012; 7:02

First of all: Sorry for writing in englich, but you will not read my italian without killing me ;)

Hi,
I cant find any information if it is possible to have a bike with me when using 'suburbani'.
I'm goung from Lecco to Chiasso (via Monza) using S8 and S11 starting around 11 o'clock.
- Is one bike/person allowed?
- Do I need a extra Ticket for the bike?
- Does the bike stay with me or is there a special place for bikes?

Thanks for helping me to figure this out :)

Hi!
Well, it's possible to travel with a bike on every regional and suburban train. You need to buy a special ticket for bicycles: it costs 3.00€ and has a 24 hours validity inside the Lombardy regional boundaries (that means it's ok for your travel).
Usually the rolling stock used on S8 hasn't got any room for bicycles, so you have to find a place by yourself on the train. If you travel out of pick hours it's quite simple. On the S11 usually there is a room in the first or the last coach where you can put your bicycle.

Thats great!
Thanks for this quick and detailed answer.
Hopefully 6 minutes time to change in Monza from S8 to S11 will be enough ;)

Why aren't you considering to go from Lecco to Chiasso via Molteno and Albate ? The route is somewhat more pleasant and the ATR trains are more modern. Check the timetable, there are not many trains but it is possible that you have to change only once, otherwise twice. I.e. take either a Lecco-Milano via Molteno (and stop in Molteno, then take a Molteno-Como) or a Lecco-Como. In all cases stop at Albate, and take the TILO train to Chiasso which originates there (nice connection, just cross to platform 4, train will be waiting for you empty).

@kosemuckel: a 6-minutes change in Monza could be easily done, considering you're travelling outside rush hours.

It is possible the Trenitalia timetable search engine does not show solutions via the route suggested by Lucio
In this case I suggest to split the query into two separate ones, searching separately
- from Lecco to Molteno
- from Molteno to Chiasso

With the solution proposed by Lucio, you have to take three different trains.
The best solution, in my modest opinion, is to take S8+S11, as you have proposed

Mrs Cooper is rigth, Molteno-Como line has an "hole" from 8:16 to 13:37, so if you need to plan your trip in the late morning your only choice is via Monza
